So it’s January, work in the kitchens and the massage world are slowing down again. Which means I need to find another source of income.
Plans are in the works for adding New Zealand Meat rabbits to our growing homestead! A good friend of my mother’s, raises them for herself and has offered to give us two females and one male to get started on our own.
The planned enclosure is quite large (under the yurt kind of large), I’m hoping that one day soon we can increase our production and I can offer rabbit meat to my friends and extended family. But for now it will just be my immediate family. Each female is supposed to produce up to 8 kits each round. And it takes 8 weeks to mature to the earliest size for slaughter. We can let them grow for longer, up to 10-12 weeks thereby producing more meat. But we will see. I am so excited to begin this part of homesteading. I have not enjoyed a solid rabbit stew in a very long time. It will be nice to experience that again.
I am hoping to be able to save all the pelts as well for odd projects around the house, I’d like a throw blanket of rabbit pelt.
The space under the Yurt where the rabbits will live. I will have decided cages so I can control a bit more when the males will mate.
Another bonus I’m excited for is that the bedding the rabbits use will become prime compost for the garden! This will help kick start my hot beds!
Anyways that’s it for today! I’ll post photos when they arrive!
Love you all.
