Yurt update!

Holy cow! Time flies! So much has happened in such a short period of time. My place of work had to close for three weeks so everyone was laid off for that time. I of course had much to do at WFH to fill my time. Lets start with a yurt update.

I have begun adding redundancies to my Yurt. While the structure has no problems handling over 1500lbs of weight added to the roof(Such as snow weight in the winter) I have added two center trees – yes trees, to support the apex ring in the Yurt; these two main supports will also provide a solid anchor for the loft that I will be building inside for the kid’s bedrooms. I have also added 25 vertical support beams around the outer edge wall of the yurt to help support the lattice during excessive snow fall. Again, not required, but a redundancy I am choosing to add.

Further to the inside, because the yurt sits on a plywood deck that is raised some three ish feet off the ground, I have added external vertical supports under each internal vertical support, to provide strength direct from the roof down to the ground. Again 25 vertical beams around the outer wall of the yurt. These are additional to the already dozen or so tree stumps the yurt deck rests on top of. Overkill?? I think so. haha. This was a fun addition, as I had to at points lift the edge of the yurt deck to fit the posts under properly. Resting them on top of concrete bricks that rest upon road crush for better drainage and leveling.

***UPDATE***

With all this extra time on my hands I’ve been able to complete the Loft! The kitties are quite happy with it.

I have also been able to add the wire mesh enclosure around underneath the yurt! This will double as a Catio for the kittens, but also next spring we plan on adding New Zealand Rabbits to our list of livestock! The cats are quite happy to have such a large space to run around in whenever they want to.

And finally, because I have added the loft, I now have a proper storage room in the West corner of the yurt, So I’ve had to get creative with my counter top to get access to this area! Thanks to my mom for the great idea of having a folding counter space!! This turned out really well! The kids are particularly happy with it as it creates, “Clubhouse Maeve” to hang out in underneath while dad bakes cookies!!!!

There is still so much going on!! Stay tuned for more!
