Flocks – Feb. 12, 2024

A few weeks ago, I made a connection with a fellow in the city who was wanting to get rid of some wood shipping crates and pallets that his company receives. He tries to reuse as much as he can but he always has so much extra. So I’ve been going in once a week with the trailer to pick up some pallets and plywood from him. It’s been a very beneficial arrangement as it costs him money to take all this good wood to the dump.

So I’ve been collecting wood as of late. And finally I had enough plywood to further insulate the chicken coop.

I cleared out as much of the bedding as I could, moving the excess into the bottoms of my garden beds.

The remainder I pushed aside so I could get the new inner walls as low to the floor as possible.

The initial thought was to maybe pick up some R14 fiberglass insulation… But I really don’t like that stuff.  So instead, because I have lots of straw, I added the new plywood and stuffed it with straw!

Once I had the boards in place, and the straw stuffed in I started to add tyvek so that it keeps the moisture in the bedding away from the wood.  Come spring with the floor thaws, I’ll be cleaning the floor and adding tyvek to the floor as well. I already have poly on the floor but the tyvek will add extra protection.

Thanks for tuning in! Until next time, I love you all!
