Toono – many of you probably don’t know what that means. It means crown/roof wheel. In English we might call it the apex, or centre ring.
All of this upgrading of the Khana(lattice wall) and Uni(roof poles) started because I wanted to replace the Toono and make one that my children and I could watch the stars through, while staying cozy and warm inside the Yurt. this led from one thing to another. Now here we are, the Uni are made and ready, the Khana are ready. It’s now time to make the Toono.
The goal I have in mind is something like the following photos. These are photos from a Yurt builder in Alaska, called Nomad Shelter. I thank them for the beautiful photos they have provided and descriptions on sizing/dimensions etc. please check them out! They make gorgeous yurts that I wish very much I could afford!
Now, obviously mine will not likely be as refined and pretty. I am nowhere near that level of carpentry! Yet! But it gives me a goal to work towards.
Their design is broken into 12’s. Because I do not have the very expensive and precise equipment or tools to produce such fine angles, I chose to go with a design slightly more forgiving with the angles.
I have made an octagonal Toono. This here photo above is not a completed version. I still have to add a bottom horizontal ring set and an inner ring set that reinforces all the joints. I also have to cut the holes for the Uni to join with. But it’s a start. This ring is five feet diameter on the outside and when completed it will be none inches thick from top to bottom. Surprisingly it is not all that heavy. I can still easily lift it with one hand!
